TeaTime- impressionist still life

Tea Time, 12x16, oil on gallery-wrapped canvas- $450

This still life painting was done in an impressionist style. The brushwork in the painting is very painterly and I limited my palette to the beautiful combinations produced with burnt sienna and alizarin crimson. The greens are in the sap family , and overall it's a very subtle piece. If you would like to purchase this painting, please use the PayPal button below. If you would like to purchase it framed in a classic gold gilt frame as shown in the photo below, please add an additional $30 to the total. Have a wonderful holiday!

French Garden- After Monet

"Garden Tryst", 12x16, oil on canvas (Note: You can click on the picture to see more detail)-$295 which includes handsome designer wooden frame!

The painting above is after Monet's painting, "Corner of the Garden with Dahlias". I loved the seemingly romantic interlude in the Argenteuil garden in that painting, which is why I decided to paint my own version. Impressionist paintings are intended to tell a story but also leave questions unanswered, so that the viewer can fill in the blanks himself.

I love the impressionist style of painting and am looking forward to the summer release of the critically acclaimed movie "Local Color". The movie is about a young artist who wants to paint in the style of the great French Impressionists, and he seeks out a Russian Impressionist master to teach him. Initially, the old man is discouraging , citing the fact that the artworld and art schools have changed direction and are no longer interested in artists who paint in traditional styles. If you would like to see the trailer of this movie, please click the link above. I am hoping that this movie will rekindle universal respect for the more traditional styles in painting, including impressionism. Recently, I discovered that London -based figurative artist Enrico David has been revealed as one of the winner's of the Turner Prize. Some may recall David's 2007 weird exhibition called "Shitty Tantrum", a series of grotesque drawings and collages portraying broken scenes from a life of high-camp nightmare, and ascending from there to an installation that purports to recreate the artist's childhood bedroom, with a cut-out of himself molesting a crucified figure of "trustworthiness". This is the type of 'art du jour' that has become the darling of the art critics in recent decades, and which runs in a diametrical direction from the more traditional art styles of the past. According to Sally Perry, CO Founder and Director of "Go Figurative" in the UK, "One of the consequences of the global recession may be that artists produce work which reflects society's need for comfort, aesthetic beauty and even tranquility. This happened following World War I with the Return to Order that included artists such as Edward Hopper following the avante garde expressionism of the previous decade. So yes, I'm sure that highly provocative will and needs to continue, but perhaps we'll see work of aesthetic value and beauty creeping in." I hope that Perry is right and that viewers of Local Color will be inspired by the beauty of traditional art forms!

Sunlit Courtyard

"Sunlit Courtyard", 12x16, oil on masonite-$195

I did this one quite a while back and my husband liked the sunniness of it so much that I hung it in my his office, where it's been for the past two years. Pitting yellow against purple set up a nice vibration and the texture in this one is also very nice. This is the first time I have offered it for sale.

By the way, I found out yesterday that my painting "Colle Verde Vineyard" is receiving an award at next week's opening reception of the Venice Art Center's Spring all- media exhibit. I know that there were many, many paintings entered into this exhibit and many were juried out, too, so I feel very happy to have been honored with an award!

Ready to Dance!- ballet art

SOLD

Les Sylphides, 8x10, oil on gallery-wrapped canvas

Back in the mid-nineties my ballet company performed Les Sylphides, a one act ballet of short dances to the music of Chopin. There were 3 female soloists, one male, and 18 corps dancers, called "Sylphs" in the ballet. The girls in the company all got a huge kick out of the little wings attached to the backs of their tutus, although they thought the ballet itself was pretty boring.

"Happy ever after bouquet"

SOLD
"Happy Ever After Bouquet", 9x12, oil on canvas (note: If you click on the painting, you can see the texture.)

Remember the fairy tales that we all read as children? In the end, every one always gets to live happily ever after, even after enormous odds and endless trials. Sometimes I wish that life was just like a fairy tale, in which everyone gets to live happily ever after. In these difficult economic times, I just wish there was a fairy godmother out there for everyone who needs one.

Anyhow, this is a feel good, kind of painting. Lots of pretty pastel colors in the flowers, and there's a good feeling about the way the gesture swoops into a nice c-curve. The mint greens within the painting are soothing, while the reds and pinks add a little punch. There's also spots of pretty texture in the painting as well, just to keep things interesting. I hope it makes someone happy today, and if you would like to purchase this painting, please email me at maryannejacobsen@aol.com.

Syncopation

SOLD"Syncopation", 5x7, oil on canvas panel

Just a fun little palette knife floral that I did last night to blow off some steam after struggling with yesterday' s Valley Forge snow scene.

Definition:syncopation - a musical rhythm accenting a normally weak beat- Since I am fond of the quirky, as a former pianist I always liked compositions with a syncopated rhythm. This piece reminded me of that. There is no focal point. Everything is screaming out to be heard all at once, but nothing is strong enough to stand on its own as the star player in this simple composition. Nothing, that is, except the texture, which is is very nice and chunky in spots. Click on the photo is the painting to see the texture.

"Winter's Chill- Valley Forge"

"Winter's Chill- Valley Forge", 8x10 , oil on canvas- $150

This is a small study that I did today. I may try a larger one at a later date; I'm not sure. I almost never paint snow, and I haven't lived in Chester County, Pennsylvania for almost 5 years, so I really had to think about light temperature before starting this painting. Pennsylvania is a beautiful state, but painting it is quite different from painting Florida landscapes which reflect a very orangey/hot light temperature most of the year. Anyhow, I love Valley Forge and I miss the bike rides that my hubby and I would take there on Saturday mornings to unwind after a hectic week of work. In winter, Valley Forge has an almost mystical quality to it. I tried to capture some essence of the quality of a cold wintry day in that historically mystical field when I painted this.

Love at First Sight-Birds of Paradise

SOLD

"Love at First Sight-Birds of Paradise", 16x20, oil on wrapped canvas (sides are painted as well)-$225 plus shipping and handling

It's a funny thing, but often when people move to Florida, they throw away their priceless antiques, home-made quilts and dried flower arrangements and re-create their environments to match the tropical feel of the state. I know I did, anyway.

Here is a "Bird of Paradise" painting that I did after studying the plants in my neighbor's yard and taking some photos. It's amazing how much these plants resemble birds from a distance!

A Year in Provence

"A Year in Provence", 12x24, oil on masonite

"Picture yourself in a boat on a river,
With tangerine trees and marmalade skies.
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly,
A girl with kaleidoscope eyes.

Cellophane flowers of yellow and green,
Towering over your head.
Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes,
And she's gone.

{CHORUS}
Lucy in the sky with diamonds,
Lucy in the sky with diamonds,
Lucy in the sky with diamonds,
Ah... Ah..."

Somehow, every time I look at this painting, I think of the Beatles' 1969 hit, "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds".

Sure, there's marmalade skies in this painting, but there's certainly no boat on the river there or even a girl with sun in her eyes! However, this painting does have many, many wonderful elements in it- the mountains of Provence, lavender fields, an old French farmhouse and even sunflowers in the foreground! Anyhow, I truly love this painting, and it has gone into many art shows over the past year or so since I first painted it. I recently decided that I need to let go and sell some of my favorite paintings in order to challenge myself to do even better work in the future, so if you like this painting, here is your opportunity.

If you have any interest in purchasing this painting, please send me an email with a reasonable offer at maryannejacobsen@aol.com. I am also willing to sell it professionally framed as well, (for an additional charge, since it is a custom frame), if someone is wanting to receive it in a custom frame ready to hang. Here is a picture of the framed piece below:

This painting has incredible depth and texture that a computer screen can simply not measure. It was painted thoughtfully with palette knife only, over a period of time. I hope you enjoy it!

Nocturne

SOLD
"Nocturne", 5x7, oil on canvas panel- $39

A tropical island with orchids wafting their scent into the sensual humidity beckons phantom travelers ashore from a sailboat that drifts dreamily in the moonlight, while in the distance ancient mountains fade gently into nothingness as they share their wisdom of the ages with gossamer clouds perched above a shimmering midsummer-moon- no, this is not a J. Peterman and Company advertisement- this is a description of a very small painting that I enjoyed doing this evening. I hope you enjoy it, too.

The Wild Pacific Coast

SOLD
"The Wild Pacific Coast", 8x10 oil on canvas panel

I'll never forget the first time that I saw the Pacific Coast. I had lived on the eastern seaboard most of my life and was never very impressed with the crowded Jersey shores that we vacationed at when I was a child. After getting married I felt fortunate that my own family had spent many lovely vacations in the turquoise waters in the Caribbean waters off Guadalupe and St. Lucia and Martinique and the Dominican Republic and many other islands, and it always was hard for me to go back to the cold, crowded, chilly and gray-colored northern Atlantic beaches after that. But in spite of those lovely turquoise waters of the Caribbean, the day that I saw the rough, wild and jagged Pacific coastline for the first time, I fell madly in love with the passion that those waters evoked inside of me! We vacationed in southern Mexico in the HUATULCO beach area a couple times and it was quite stunning though still foreign -feeling to me, a non Spanish-speaking American. We also vacationed in the Baja peninsula once and that was also stunning but rather too desert-like for my tastes with its iguanas and snakes everywhere. But the year my husband and I drove up the California coastline from San Diego to San Francisco really opened my eyes to the reason why so many people decide to make the Pacific coast of California their permanent homes. It is no wonder that so many artists thrive there, and I admit I am jealous of those that call the southern Pacific coastal area their home!

This painting was done with a palette knife from a photo we took as we drove up the twisting, curving Pacific highway a few years ago. If I were younger, I would move there in a heartbeat, perhaps to a place like La Jolla, which is just north of San Diego and very chic and very beautiful. I hope to go back one of these days soon, but in the meantime, I'll just paint the memories.
